Social media for small businesses — the excuses I hear most

Ask a room full of small business owners whether they should be doing more on social media, and just about every hand goes up. Then ask how many of them actually post on a regular basis, and most of those hands quietly come back down.

I understand. I run a small business too. My business is about social media marketing, yet for the longest time, I ignored our own social media marketing. Sometimes, you’re busy finding clients, doing marketing, and delivering the work. When every guru online is telling you to do more of this or that, it’s easiest to just stop doing anything or just analyze everything you “ought” to be doing.

But most of the time when I’m talking about social media for small businesses, they aren’t getting customers from social media because of the excuses they’re making. In today’s article I want to talk about the excuses I hear the most. Here they are:

Five Excuses Small Businesses Make for Avoiding Social Media

Excuse 1: “I don’t have time.”

This is number one by a long shot. So here’s my challenge: make the time. You don’t need an hour a day. When you show up at a job site, take a photo. When you’re working from a coffee shop, take a photo. Ten seconds, then post it. Nobody wakes up thinking about your company, but everybody scrolls in the morning and at night. Give them something of yours to land on. The businesses winning on social media aren’t spending more time than you. They’ve just built the habit into their day.

Excuse 2: “I don’t like social media.”

Fair enough. But do you like your business succeeding? You might hate flying, but if you want to get to Hawaii, you’re getting on the plane. Same deal. And there’s a difference between creating and consuming. Most people who say they hate social media just hate scrolling it or hate the political debates that end in arguments and broken relationships. Posting for your business is a different thing. You’re not there to waste time. You’re there to be seen. Don’t let your personal preferences stand in the way of your business’s success.

Excuse 3: “Social media doesn’t work for small businesses in my industry.”

I hear this from people who assume their customers aren’t online. They are. The question was never whether your customers scroll. It’s whether you’re giving them a reason to notice you when they do. Every industry has somebody winning on social media right now. The only question is whether it’ll be you or your competitor. Your customers are online, and the statistics suggest that every demographic is on social media. Those you think are not there are just quieter than the rest.

Excuse 4: “I tried it and it didn’t work.”

When I hear this excuse, my first question is always: how long did you try? Because two weeks isn’t enough. Two months probably isn’t enough either. Social media pays off for the consistent, not the quick. It’s not enough to throw up an AI generated post here and there and think you’ve “tried” social media. Quitting early doesn’t prove it doesn’t work. It proves you stopped. And if what you were posting wasn’t landing, that’s useful information. Adjust and keep going. If you don’t know how to do that, book a consultation and we’ll walk through how to look at your social media insights.

Excuse 5: “I don’t know what to post.”

Post your work. Post behind the scenes. Pull out your phone and talk about why you started the company. Show a project before and after. Introduce your team. Marketing is reminding people you exist, over and over, until they feel something when they hear your name. Don’t overthink it. Just post something. Bonus: “I don’t like being on camera.”

Good news. You don’t have to be. Photos, graphics, screen shares, customer stories. Plenty of businesses grow without the owner’s face ever showing up. Your voice and your work can carry the whole thing.

Every one of these excuses feels reasonable in the moment. But they’re also the reason your competitors are getting customers you’re not. Pick one excuse and kill it this week. Take the photo. Make the post.
