You do not need an hour to make a video. You need the 15-minute video habit.
Most of us business owners fail at video for the same reason we fail at the gym. We put it off until we have a big open block of time, and we never get that open block. For real, who has extra time? Most businesses fill every hour you give it, and making video has to fit inside the day you already have.
So you need a habit. Here it is.
How the 15-minute video habit works
Same time, same spot, every weekday. Fifteen minutes, split three ways.
Five minutes to plan. Pick one thing. It could be a question a customer asked this week or a job you finished. It could even just be something you believe about your work. Write one sentence about it. That sentence is your video plan.
Five minutes to film. Put your phone on a tripod, with you facing a window or a lamp, and only give yourself one take. Talk like you are explaining it to one customer standing in front of you. If you stumble, keep going. A real stumble is okay. Actually, a stumble might help people watch your video (plus if you know you’re okay with stumbles, you’re less likely to stumble).
Five minutes to post. The three things you have to do to post your video are: Add captions, write two lines about what you said, and post it. Captions are important because most people watch with the sound off, so make sure you add those into your video before you post it.
So there you have an entire routine. Fifteen minutes a day, five days a week. On Friday you’ve published five videos and your page is now alive. People will comment, and you should reply. Maybe that becomes part of your habit after you get some video creation under your belt.
The habit is the point. Your phone will get you started, and starting is the hard part. Your phone video will only get you so far, though. Once the habit is solid and you are posting consistently, that is when professional video earns its keep: better light, better sound, better editing, and a video that matches the quality of the business you have actually built.
Start with fifteen minutes. Keep the habit. Then level up when you are ready.
If you start posting video because of this post, let me know by tagging me in your videos @clickitmediainc or @drpoulette. I can’t wait to see what you create and hear the stories you tell!
